Is Survival Selfish
Do you believe people must be selfish to survive? This is main question of this essay. Survival does not require people to be selfish in order to survive because. People who survive live because they keep a cool head and they think clearly. People survive because they think of loved ones and what they might feel if the person dies.
People who don’t keep a cool head often die in a crisis, just like zombie apocalypse movies promise. Having a positive mental attitude is the number one thing that defines whether a person survives or dies. Gonzoles explains that, “Cool is the ultimate American conception of the survival model. James Stockdale, a fighter pilot who was shot down over Vietnam in 1965, spoke many times about how he survived seven and a half years in prison camp...He’s talking about being cool, just as he was” (Gonzales 334). The fighter pilot had a cool head, and it wasn’t by being selfish, explaining that you don’t have to be selfish to survive a crisis. Another example that supports this are doctors and combat medics. Helping other people keeps people calm in a crisis. Doctors help people before they are attended to. (Gonzales 333). Not only do people need to keep calm in a crisis, they also need to have a positive mental attitude.
People need a reason to survive in a crisis and many people make others that reason. They think of others instead of themselves. Many people claim that they survived because they were thinking of their loved ones and the pain they would go through if they died. “Many people who survive alone report that they were doing it for someone else (a wife, boyfriend, mother, son) back home. When Antione de saint- Exuperia was lost in a Libyan Desert, it was the thought of his wife’s suffering that kept him going...” (Gonzales 332). This quote is very important because it shows people who survive do it for their loved ones back home and not for themselves. Another piece of evidence is Di Francisco.. When Ronald DiFrancesco survived the World Trade Center attack, he said, “Iv'e got to see my wife and kids again ” (Gonzales 332). This provides that survival is not selfish although it’s clear that not everybody agrees with this.
Some people argue that survival is selfish because people shouldn’t assume, they can help others. This is wrong because doctors and nurses help saves other people so live more often. They survive because they aren't selfish. So, it’s obvious that survival is not selfish for many reasons.
Because people have to keep a cool head and have a reason to survive, survival is not selfish. A man named James Stockdale survived a plane crash in Vietnam survived in a prison camp for seven and a half years just keeping calm and keeping a cool head. Another person survived in the Libyan Desert because he was thinking of his family back home. So, is survival selfish? No, it’s not.
